About the Project

The Dennison Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Dennison name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Dennison name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Dennison's), by time period (18th Century Dennison's), or by topic (Dennison DNA, Dennison Occupations, Dennison Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Origin

There are a few theories as to where the name originated from:

Scotland The Dennison surname comes from the place name Danzielstoun, in Scotland. Thus Dennison is a local surname, which belongs to a category of hereditary surnames derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads.

England The Dennison surname is a patronymic, created from the personal name Dennis; thus the name originally meant "son of Dennis." Dennis comes ultimately from the Latin Dionysius.

Ancient Greek It derives from the medieval given name Dennis, itself coming from the Greek Dionysios meaning "the divine one of Nysa". Better known as Bacchus, this god was protector of the vine.
